Buddhism is generally designated as a gradual course of training (anupubbasikkh) which is to be cultivated in daily life the thirty seven factors of enlightenment which, by definition are practical, play a vital role in this course. They put more and more emphasis on the discipline in human life in the field of morality and wisdom. It is hoped that by practicing thirty seven factors of enlightenment individual life is purified and human society becomes peaceful. The classification of Buddhas teaching into thirty seven factors of enlightenment can be seen at the latter part of the historical development of Buddhist literature. They have some affinity with the Abhidhamma philosophy as both are dealing with mental and physical phenomena (Dhammas). It is believed that the main concern of abhidhamma philosophy is to pave the way for the cultivation of wisdom which is the purifying force, according to Buddhs teaching, However, the thirty seven factors of enlightenment explain such basic concepts of Buddhism as mindfulness right striving, psychic powers, five faculties, five spiritual powers, seven limbs of enlightenment and noble eightfold path.
This course of lectures has been dsigned to give the students of Buddhism a general understanding of all these concepts enabling them to apply the knowledge acquired thereby in their dailiy life and to have a discipline in the field f morality and wisdom (Sla-Pa). What is emphasized in these lectures is not only the theories of Buddhism but the practice as well. The theory without practice is meaningless, and the practice without a theory is blind. The lectures will be based specially on the following: Satipa hna sutta, Rathavin´ta sutta of the Majjhima nikya; the sutras collected into Satipa hna saµyutta, Sammappadhna saµyutta, Iddhipda saµyutta, Indriya saµyutta, Bojjhaµga saµyutta and Magga saµyutta of the Saµyuttanikya and the Path of Purification.
